Garbage disposals are a small electric appliance that's installed underneath a kitchen sink between the drain and a "trap," which collects and shreds food waste into pieces that are small enough to pass through your home's plumbing system. Just like any other mechanical piece of equipment, and because it's connected to your sewage or septic system, there's a good chance that plumbing issues can occur at some point. When that happens it's good to know a reliable plumber that knows how to diagnose and repair your garbage disposal.

Father & Son Plumbing & Heating will work to make sure that whatever issues occur with your garbage disposal are diagnosed accurately and repaired correctly, before they create more problems for your home. We can also professionally install garbage disposals, and help you choose the correct model for your application.

If your garbage disposal is clogged or stops working, don't hesitate to call the professionals at Father & Son Plumbing and Heating for plumbing repairs in Metro-Detroit and the surrounding areas. We're happy to help you with all of your plumbing needs, whatever they may be.

Common Garbage Disposal Problems

Fix it yourself!  Try following these simple steps before calling a professional. Cleaning the disposal can often get rid of any foul odors and improve efficiency. If you notice any strange smells coming from your garbage disposal, try these steps:

  • Grind ice cubes and orange, lemon, or lime rinds in the disposal for about 30 seconds.
  • Pour a small amount of liquid dish detergent into the disposal while it is still running.
  • Rinse any remaining debris by running cold water for about 30 seconds.
  • If the problem persists, contact us for plumbing services in Metro-Detroit right away.

If your garbage disposal stops working completely, many disposals have a reset button you can check before calling a professional plumber for garbage disposal repairs. Most garbage disposals have an overload protector that senses when the motor is overheating and shuts it off. If your garbage disposal stops during use, this is most likely your problem, and it's an easy fix.

Your next steps should be:

  • Turn the disposal switch off.
  • Keep your hands and other objects away from the drain.
  • Make sure the disposal is plugged in all the way in the outlet.
  • With the power switch turned off, press the reset switch. You should be able to reach it on the front or bottom of the garbage disposal.
  • Turn the garbage disposal back on and test it.

If your garbage disposal isn't working, and resetting doesn't fix it, give us a call. We can accurately diagnose the issue and have your garbage disposal repaired quickly. We've been Metro-Detroit's on-call professional plumbers for years.  The local community trusts us with their garbage disposal repairs along with all of their other plumbing repairs. So you can be confident that we'll get to the bottom of your disposal's problems.
